We spent many Christmases with Grandma at the lodge. It was a real gift that I hope I never took for granted. She made sure that all ten of us granddaughters felt seen and heard amidst the wonderful chaos of family gatherings. She created welcoming and comforting spaces. Her hospitality was about about you, not her. She was open hearted and had a ‘love first, ask questions later’ spirit. My family has a tradition of playing Shanghai rummy almost every evening over holiday gatherings. It’s not an inherently funny game, but the way her kids (my dad and his siblings) acted when then got together - completely ridiculously - made her laugh uncontrollably. Watching her double over in laughter was my favorite part of every night. Her children were the joy of her life. I hope that I will carry a little bit of her welcoming and joyful spirit with me until I see her again.
